Complete your Ray Wilson collection. Song For A Friend" is dedicated to Ray's friend, James Lewis, who died in 2015. Inspired by the many intimate experiences from his acoustic storytelling concerts, Ray decided to write a collection of musical short stories. Stories, simply, about life. Stiltskin guitarist and collaborator, Uwe Metzler, sketched out some acoustic ideas, and the journey began. Moving through jealousy, anger, hurt, regret, disappointment, fate, and love. Whether a concert or an album they are a journey for the soul. A journey that will allow you to escape your demons and embolden yourself, spiritually. This album was written to inspire. When you feel like giving in, when you feel you are losing the will to keep pushing or fighting. This was written to help you dig deep, and fight for joy and peace in your life. The meaning of life is the journey. This album encapsulates that journey.

The sin in question is that of completely ignoring the output of Ray Wilson since his departure from Genesis after their Calling all Stations album back in 1997. So whilst I knew he kept doing stuff somehow it never troubled me to find out about it for myself. I’m not normally a big fan of acoustic singer-songwriters but there is something special and heart–warming about the Song For A Friend album. Sadly though, 99% of people will never get to hear it, which is a tragedy in itself as music this good certainly deserves a far wider audience and acclaim as its themes are common ones that can touch each of us at times. Yes it’s low key, but even so it has a vibrancy and passion that is often lacking in much modern music. For me personally, this is a revelation and I will certainly work backwards from here to discover other fine music from this greatly.

Ray Wilson might not be a known name in the Prog world were it not for an unlikely opportunity to front one of the most important Prog-rock groups of all-time in Genesis. While that lineup only recorded one album and disbanded shortly after, it brought Wilson to the attention of many fans of Genesis and Progressive rock, and it’s great thing that happened. Otherwise, we might have been deprived of knowing one of the great voices in rock today. Wilson is not a traditional Prog rock singer. He is more one by association. Much of the album has to do with a friend that had passed in Wilson’s life. With each song, he tells another story and paints a vivid picture with each line. On the title track, he goes down memory lane, If you look over there, that’s where I was born. The song is haunting, as he recalls simple memories of his mother, She was just the best mom in the world.
