A Beginning Song Lyrics. About What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World. Explaining the concept (or lack of concept) behind the album, frontman Colin Meloy told American Songwriter: I think the last couple records have been conceptual. I think Picaresque was sort of conceptual in that we rented out a church and recorded it there and the sounds have a lot of space to them, and a lot of the songs are very narrative. Hazards of Love is obviously conceptual because it is a concept record. Producers The Decemberists & Tucker Martine. More The Decemberists albums. Traveling On - EP. I'll Be Your Girl.

What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World is the seventh studio album from The Decemberists, released on January 20, 2015. The album's title comes from a line in the song "12/17/12", a reference to the date of Barack Obama's speech in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and lead singer Colin Meloy's conflicting feelings about the shooting and his happy personal life.

As it turns out, 2014's What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World finds the Decemberists managing to have it both ways; if anything, many of these songs are brighter and hookier than those on The King Is Dead, but if this is pop, it's pop that's keenly intelligent, melodically adventurous, obsessively literate, and perfectly willing to explore sadness and. disappointment rather than just the upbeat moods that are expected to accompany catchy melodies.

The result is What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, their seventh studio album. There will surely be those who lament the loss of the high-concept Decemberists album. While What a Terrible World ultimately feels much less belabored than either of the band’s last two releases, it also blends the personal and the fictional to form a less cohesive whole. As a singles-driven pop record, it might garner a hit or two; as a Decemberists record, it ever-so-slightly misses the mark. Essential Tracks: Cavalry Captain, Make You Better, and 12/17/12.

Complete your The Decemberists collection. I just realized today that this box set has the signatures of the band members when I added it to my collection. Although this item shows in the notes that "Inside cover of gatefold includes signatures of all band members", the signatures for my set is on the back-side of album, on either side of the track listings. I should investigate on how to upload photographs. Anyway, a great sounding album.

On their seventh LP, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, they balance out and cruise down the middle of the road, sounding more like a polite, modern folk rock band with only a touch of antiquity here and there. It’s a charming but predictable album aimed at the faithful, but provides few if any new tracks that measure up to those in their back catalog. To borrow a theme from the album, this is the part of the the Decemberists’ story where you skim to the next chapter.
