The Vinyl Factory is proud to present The ADA Project by Conrad Shawcross at its exhibition space at Brewer Street Car Park in Soho, London. Using a combination of vocal processing, synthesis and recordings of the robot in motion, Holly Herndon attempted to emote the sentience implied in the robot's movements as she curiously probes and surveys her environment
The Ada Project is an ongoing series of musical commissions between myself and leading contemporary composers. Each piece of music was developed using a bespoke choreographic light robot developed by my team and I in my me in London. Exposed to stories, philosophies and ideas surrounding the Victorian mathematician Ada Lovelace, from whom the project takes its name, each musician lived with us for around a week – responding directly to the movement, physicality, and tempo of a unique piece of choreography created on the robot

Herndon spent a week in Shawcross’s studio in Hackney, living upstairs while spending her days singing to the robot in the sitting room, sweeping microphones across its engines and composing on the fly in response to its elegant seesawing movements. Shawcross’s co-curator Ken Farmer points to the way Herndon’s work traverses composition, and sound design, with playing at Berghain as one of the elements that drew them to her for this project. More than just a single exhibit in a single gallery, the Ada Project is to be an ongoing programme of residencies and collaborations, travelling across the world. Before long, the robot and its soundtrack will leave the Palais de Tokyo and cross the ocean to take part in the annual music festival of the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania.

asked some musicians to respond to the robot, and the robot has a choreography that’s really beautiful, has a light on its, I don’t know whether to call it a nose because it’s not really like humanoid. So I sampled the sound of the robot and I added some voice. Well, that makes me look like really self-obsessed because I’m listening to mixes from the album that I made but there’s something else in there. I don’t know if you guys know who that is.
