Five of Los Angeles' best musicians of 1960, all veterans of the cool jazz scene, are featured on this CD reissue. While the solos are excellent, trumpeter Conte Candoli's six originals (two co-written with pianist Vince Guaraldi) are not particularly memorable. Their chord structures are comfortable for the musicians but none of the melodies will be remembered after the CD ends. Another minus is the brief playing time (under 29 minutes) which makes one wish that the music (originally on a long out of print Crown LP) had been combined with another complementary set.

Album details. Recorded in Hollywood February 3, 1960. Originally issued on Lp as Crown 5162. Best-known as the trumpet section leader in Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show Band, Conte Candoli was a fine all-around jazz stylist most at home in the worlds of bop and West Coast cool jazz. Younger by four years than his similarly accomplished trumpet-playing brother Pete, Conte was born Secondo Candoli in Mishawaka, IN, on July 12, 1927. He first patterned himself after players like Harry James, Roy Eldridge, and Dizzy Gillespie, later discovering Miles Davis and Clifford Brown.
