Richard Strauss Komödie für Musik in drei Aufzügen, op. 59 Libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal World premiere 26 January 1911, Königliches Opernhaus, Dresden. New production Premiere 5 september 2015. Richard Strauss and his librettist situated their comedy Der Rosenkavalier in the Vienna of Empress Maria Theresa, the city of nostalgia and faded glory. Old and young stand face to face, as do impoverished nobility and new money. Strauss created new sounds, which he subtly incorporated into his music. The rhythm of the Viennese waltz pulsates throughout the piece. The orchestra gives a varied programme of concerts in the Concertgebouw, as well as performing in various Dutch concert halls and at venues and festivals abroad.
Strauss also dedicated his tone poem Eine Alpensinfonie to the orchestra, which employed Rudolf Kempe, still in his early years, as music director (1949-1953). All of the recordings featured on this album were previously released as part of the set mentioned above. The featured works are the early tone poems Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel, music from the opera Der Rosenkavalier, and the very late work for string orchestra Metamorphosen. All four are works Kempe excelled in. The style of these performances is evident from the very opening bars of Don Juan.
