Starting with a breezy, uptempo song that's part motorik zone, part kicking it on a relaxed afternoon, Harbors finds All Tiny Creatures in engaging mood throughout, letting the music convey most of whatever message Thomas Wincek and his numerous collaborators and bandmates might have. Said message can perhaps best be called pleasure in sound; there's an engaging, almost giddy feeling throughout even when the few direct vocal parts aim for the quietly sung and absorbed.
It's striking how Harbors manages to form a central aesthetic that's identifiable as All Tiny Creatures but can also fold in a wide array of influences. But the rippling guitar and choir-like singing of the closing "Plankton March" ties the loose ends together and again showcases this group's gift for sifting bundles of sincerity into song via the disparate elements at their disposal
All Tiny Creatures : Harbors. All Tiny Creatures’ intense focus on aesthetics isn’t confined merely to the music, but the visual package as well. Harbors‘ cover, designed by Aaron Draplin, depicts various circular clusters of colorful objects that seem to create the perfect visual representation of the band’s strange yet beautiful compositions. Each component is intriguing on its own, but they all seem to create something bigger and more impressive when conjoined. It’s something quite special to hear all of the pieces fit just right
Harbors will be friendly territory for those familiar with Wincek’s guitar work in Collections and Volcano Choir, as he hasn’t bailed on the billowy post-soft-rock that provided the anchor for those bands’ experimentation. But All Tiny Creatures splits the difference between Colonies’ instrumental progressivism and Volcano Choir’s electronic meanderings. It’s all about texture and mood over narrative cohesion with All Tiny Creatures, which blends electronic ambient passages with fluttering interlocking guitar riffs and a wide-scope grandeur.
