Two Gallants - What The Toll Tells mp3 flac

What The Toll Tells is a majestic ode to pride, sporting a rich sound and Two Gallants most energetic songs.

The long compositions are modernized with the sort of croaky vocals and spiky guitars familiar from Bright Eyes and Cursive. The album opens with its strongest track, "Las Cruces Jail". Two Gallants are borrowing otherness, which raises the stakes significantly. The nagging discomfort we're so good at ignoring when we listen to music that handles history like costume jewelry is thrown into stark relief by "Long Summer Day", a reworking of Moses "Clear Water" Platt's scathing work song (Platt's original is included on Deep River of Song: Black Texicans, which collects Alan Lomax's 1930s field-recordings of. African-American music on the Texas frontier). I want to believe that Two Gallants had good intentions in covering this song.

What The Toll Tells’, the follow-up to the excellent ‘The Throes’ and once again released on their mentor and Bright Eyes chief Conor Oberst’s label Saddle Creek, is a record as wide-eyed as the most boundless, unmapped prairie terrain. It contains the thrills of exploring vast, roaming plains, while infusing its environment with the promise and hope to be located on uncharted, nature-worn, virgin-ventured soil  . Two Gallants: just two little boys and their picture-painting musical toys.

This album is the second release from the San Francisco folk-punk duo, Two Gallants, and their first on Saddle Creek records. The signing garnered them some more attention from fans of the other bands on Saddle Creek, such as Bright Eyes, it didn't have an affect on the greatness of their music at all. This album is still filled with folk classics just as The Throes was. The record starts off with the first single of the album, Las Cruces Jail. This song has a lot of energy in it and is a really nice album opener.

Two Gallants is a band set out to tell a breathtaking, passionate story. Rather than using pictures or filling up hundreds of pages with words, they have chosen music as their medium with which to tell their story, or rather a novella. A novella is described as short prose being either satire or teaching a moral. What the Toll Tells is a passionate tale of murder, running away, jail, patriotism, and racism sending its listener rollicking through what feels much like the Old West with its references to Billy the Kid and its setting which seems to exist in that cowboy past
