NYC 1978 was the final live album by American punk rock band, the Ramones. The performance was recorded January 07 1978 near Union Square at the Palladium as part of the King Biscuit Flower Hour Archive Series. This is the last commercially recorded performance with Tommy Ramone as the Ramones' drummer. He left the band soon afterwards, although he continued to work with the other members as a producer and manager until 2014.

Between 1976 and 1978, the Ramones could seemingly do no wrong, and It's Alive, the album that preserved their 1977-going-on-1978 New Year's Eve show in London for the ages, captured the pride of Forest Hills at the peak of their form, turning three-chord downstroke into the stuff of magic. By 1990, the band's albums were generally good but not great, and it seemed as if their days of studio glory were behind them

The resulting album, Ramones, was released in the spring, gained some critical attention, and managed to climb to 111 on the . On July 4, the band made their debut appearance in Britain, where their records were becoming a big influence on a new generation of bands. By the end of the year, the group released their second album, Ramones Leave Home. The band returned to recording in 1992, first releasing the live Loco Live and then Mondo Bizarro, their first studio album in three years. Mondo Bizarro turned out to be a commercial failure, as did their 1994 covers album, Acid Eaters. Following the release of Acid Eaters, the mainstream guitar rock audience in America finally embraced punk rock in the form of young bands like Green Day and the Offspring.
